Speaking at the "Ez livirim” (I am here) meeting in Urfa, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ said that over six thousand Kurdish politicians have been jailed in the last three years. Calling out to the government, Demirtaþ said that “You cannot destroy the Kurdistan reality even if you use all your power.”
Demirtaþ said the followings; “Now that operations and massacres continue regardless of harsh winter conditions, we will in the same way continue to take to streets regardless of the weather and winter conditions. We are under a pressure and cruelty more than ever in Turkey’s history. While arrests continue uninterrupted for the last three years, six thousand and two hundred politicians have been arrested within this period. However, despite everything, we call for peace and democracy while the AKP government doesn’t recognize our peace and laws and resort to all kinds of slaughter and arrest to oppress us.”
Calling out to the government, Demirtaþ said that; “You have the power to apply cruelty but you don’t have the power to destroy or to change some truths. You cannot ignore the demands of the Kurdish people who will continue to resist if their demands aren’t replied to. Can you arrest all of these 15 millions of people? Nobody can agree to the prohibition of their language and culture in their own territory. They will resist to reject that.”
Pointing out to the isolation on PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Demirtaþ continued as follows; “The reasonable solution offers by Mr. Öcalan were met with the imposition of a regime of isolation. We want freedom for Öcalan, not the removal of the isolation. The deadlock can only be ended in Imralý. We will be taking part in the constitution making process but without any conditions. Without bowing, we will be on the streets until Newroz [Kurdish New Year, 21 March] to voice our demands. We will be on the streets despite the police operations which have been carried out to silence and to jail us in our houses.”
Following the speech, Demirtaþ went to Urfa E-Type Prison to visit the political prisoners.
