Dicle taken to Provincial Election Board - UPDATE

Newly elected MP for Diyarbakir, Hatip Dicle has been taken from prison to the Provincial Election Board in what is considered to be the first step towards the release of the Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block's candidate.

Dicle has been in prison since 24 December 2009 after been arrested with scores of Kurdish politicians and activists in what has become known as the KCK (Confederation of Kurdish Communities) trial.

Eyes have turned to Turkish Supreme Election Board (YSK) following the Ankara 11th High Criminal Court's approval of the one year and eight months imprisonment sentence given to Dicle by the High Court. In line with the demand of YSK which will declare a decision after taking Dicle's statement, Hatip Dicle has been taken from Diyarbakir E-Type Closed Prison to the Provincial Election Board.

On the other hand, the Penal Department no. 9 of the Supreme Court reversed the 10-year prison sentence of Diyarbakýr Independent MP Leyla Zana whose verdict of conviction from nine separate offenses was rescinded on the grounds of Zana's imperfect statement.

Standing trial at Diyarbakir 5th High Criminal Court for allegedly "making propaganda for the armed terrorist organization" at nine separate speeches at various dates, Leyla Zana's file was objected upon the imposition of 10-year prison sentence.

The file was therewith sent to the Penal Department no. 9 of the Supreme Court which accepted the bill of review of the file.

While the Supreme Court attributed the reversion to Zana's imperfect statement, the file will again be referred to Diyarbakir 5th High Criminal Court. The court will make a new decision after taking Zana's statement.
