DIHA reporter arrested in Batman

DIHA (Dicle News Agency) reporter Gülsen Aslan and Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Politics Academy worker Salih Keleþ have been arrested in Batman today.

Aslan and Keleþ were among 44 people who were taken into custody on 4 February in Batman within the scope of a “KCK City Council” operation. After giving statement to the court, Aslan and Keleþ were released by the court pending a trial.

However, police has once more taken Aslan and Keleþ into custody this morning in Batman Office of DIHA in connection with the Public Prosecutor’s objection to a higher court about the releases. Aslan and Keleþ were arrested and sent to Batman M Type Prison on charges of “performing KCK activities”.

Among 44 people who were taken into custody in Batman on 4 February, 31 were arrested for allegedly “performing KCK activities”.

According to figures of the Platform for Solidarity with Arrested Reporters (TGDP), 105 journalists are currently held in prison in Turkey. (The number rose to 106 with Aslan's arrest). Among them 20 are grant holders and editors in chief.

According to the figures compiled by ANF from TGDP’s list, at least 71 of them are Kurdish journalists working for the Kurdish media; 29 for DIHA, 16 for Azadiya Welat and 12 for Özgür Gündem paper. Separately, more than 30 distributors of Kurdish papers are also held under arrest currently. .
