In a written statement about the ongoing death fast of Nusaybin Mayor Ayşe Gökkan, DISK (Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions) President Kani Beko demanded an answer to Gökkan's demand for the demolition of the wall of shame Turkey is building between Nusaybin and the Qamishlo city in west Kurdistan.
Beko remarked that the wall against the Kurdish people is being built at a time witnessing an ongoing war and bloody attacks and massacres by armed gangs on the other side of the border. He underlined that the construction of the wall of shame went against neighbourhood relations, human rights and the international law, and exposed the government's attitude towards the Kurdish people and its intention in relation to the 'peace process'.
Referring to the recent statements of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who has voiced complaints and concerns over the together living of university students in same houses, Beko stressed that “The AKP government is mistaken if it thinks that it will strengthen its authority by building walls between students, workers, women and Kurds in the 21st century. To understand this truth, it should just take a look at the 'fate' of the walls in the history and those who built them.”
Beko said the ongoing construction of the Nusaybin-Qamishlo wall risked the health of mayor Ayşe Gökkan and others accompanying her, and demanded the immediate suspension of the wall building.
