Diyarbakýr Municipality campaign for Van
Diyarbakýr Metropolitan Municipality has launched a campaign ‘I am sharing my house with the people of Van’.
Diyarbakýr Mayor Osman Baydemir made a statement to the press on the campaigns launched by the municipality for the earthquake victims in Van city center, districts and villages where still many people suffer from snow and cold weather in the shelters they themselves put up by their own means.
Baydemir remarked that conditions in the earthquake region are getting worse and worse with the winter and noted that the municipalities of Diyarbakýr, its districts and those member to GABB (Southeastern Anatolia Region Union of Municipalities) have been in an active solidarity in Van and Erciþ and given every effort to help victims since the beginning.
Baydemir also gave information about a new project which will set up multipurpose centers in five separate areas in Van city. The centers will meet daily needs such as wash houses, bathrooms and social rehabilitation areas for children, noted Baydemir and pointed out that DÝSKÝ (Diyarbakýr water and sewerage administration) would also give an active effort in this process to renew the demolished substructure in the area.
Baydemir notified about another solidarity campaign which has been launched to provide single food packages, which will be prepared to meet the food need for at least two months, owing to the risk of heavy snowfall to close the roads to villages in winter months. “We aim to reach at least seven thousand packages to the people living in rural areas in the soonest time”, added Baydemir.
Baydemir stated that the campaign ‘I am sharing my house with Van’s people’ has been launched owing to the impossibility of spending the winter in tents and called on especially rich and high income families in Diyarbakýr to share their houses with brothers from Van.
Baydemir invited people who would want to join the campaign to the Solidarity Desk under the Social Service Department of Diyarbakýr Municipality and to fill in application forms there so that a balance could be ensured between families by correctly determining the population and economic conditions of both sides.
