Ehmedê Xanî Kurdish Language Academy in Diyarbakýr

Diyarbakýr Municipality has opened Ehmedê Xanî Kurdish Language Academy (Akademîya Ziman û Wêjeya Kurdî ya Ehmedê Xanî) to carry out works for the protection of Kurdish and other languages in the region.

The opening ceremony of the Academy was also attended by BDP Siirt MP Osman Özçelik, BDP Provincial Chair Zübeyde Zümrüt, Mayor Osman Baydemir, district mayors, representatives of Kurdish institutions and many researchers and writers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kurdish Language Academy President Hayrettin Altun pointed out that the Kurdish language survived despite all kinds of bans imposed for a thousand years. Altun remarked that the Academy would perform works for the protection of all languages in the region, not only for the Kurdish language.

Another speech at the ceremony was made by Diyarbakýr Mayor Osman Baydemir, who pointed out that the resistance for Kurdish language’s freedom which was started by Ehmede Xani has inflicted pain on numerous writers, artists and politicians who have since then protected the freedom of their language. We owe them gratefulness, said Baydemir and underlined that;

“We don’t ban the language and culture of anyone and we don’t show disrespect for any belief. What we demand is to keep our language, identity and culture alive in leading an honorable life in our own land, just like world’s all peoples do.”

Baydemir called on Kurdish politicians and intellectuals for unity and continued as follows; “I am afraid the domination of those who don’t see our language and culture as civilized will continue unless all the oppressed peoples generate a unity as it constitutes the basis of freedom, religion and culture.”

“Killing a language means killing a civilization”, said Baydemir, sending a message to Ankara, and added that the Kurdish people would be fighting to remove all obstacles they face for protecting their language and culture.
