EMEP President: Constitutional Court should reject application demanding the closure of the HDP

EMEP President Ercüment Akdeniz said that the case filed for the closure of the HDP shows how the AKP-MHP fascist ruling bloc is actually influencing the judiciary.

Speaking to ANF, Labor Party (EMEP) chair, Ercüment Akdeniz, described the HDP's closure case as the judicial manifestation of the AKP-MHP fascist ruling bloc. "They want to suppress social opposition by closing the HDP," said Akdeniz, adding that it is everyone's duty to struggle to prevent the HDP from being closed.

Emphasizing that stripping HDP Kocaeli deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu of his deputyship was unlawful, Ercüment Akdeniz said: “This decision has shown the reality of the civil constitution, reform and human rights action plan brought about by the AKP government are. It doesn't make any sense to boast about reform packages, when the practices are like this."

Akdeniz emphasized that the lawsuit filed by the Supreme Court of Appeals Prosecutor's Office for the closure of the HDP should not be viewed as a case against the HDP alone and said: “The AKP has shown that it is a tutelary party. Within the 1982 constitution brought about by the September 12 coup, there are anti-democratic institutions that have survived to the present."

Stating that party closures were also based on the coup constitution, Akdeniz added: “Based on this, the discussions on the closure of the HDP continued with an application to the Constitutional Court (AYM) with a little surprise move. For the Labor Party, this decision is the judicial manifestation of the political instructions of the AKP-MHP bloc. The judiciary is under political influence and pressure. At the same time, this decision is not only a decision against the HDP. Through the HDP, all social opposition is wanted to be suppressed. Our primary demand is that the Constitutional Court rejects this decision. Otherwise, it would be an illegal decision. Turkey's workers and laborers, labor and democratic forces must defend the HDP as they are also targeted by this decision. In this country, 200 thousand workers' strikes were banned. The will of the people was ignored with the appointment of trustees; the will of the academy is ignored in the universities."

Reiterating that they will be in solidarity with HDP, Akdeniz stated that the closure case is a problem of democracy and freedom for the whole people.

"It is everyone's duty, both east and west, to defend the HDP. We will be in solidarity with HDP. Turkey is living a very polarised period. There is a republican alliance on one side and a nation alliance on the other. A third option needs to be opened: a revolutionary democratic popular option."
