Families of jailed children spoke out

Families of jailed children in Pozantý Prison have told of their concerns about sexual abuse claims and violations of their children’s rights.

Families evaluate the claims unacceptable and call on competent authorities for sensitivity to the situation of their children.

Reporting on the testimonies by families, daily Özgür Gündem carried the statement by mother Gülendam A. whose son has been held in Pozantý juvenile prison for the last five months remarks that her son had many times admitted his exposure to different kinds of torture .“While the imprisonment of my son has already hurt us too much, our pain has increased since we heard about sexual abuse claims in the recent months. I lose sleep over thinking whether my son is also exposed to sexual abuses”, says Mother Gülendam and underlines their demand for the closure of the prison where children suffer from ill treatments.  Gülendam calls for investigation into the allegations in point.

Zeynel, father of another jailed child, tells that he has observed many physical changes on his son since he was brought to Mersin Prison from Pozantý juvenile prison. Zeynel remarks that they are concerned over the recent sexual abuse claims and adds; ”We demand an investigation and the trial of the responsible if the allegations are confirmed to be true.”

Emine, mother of a child who was arrested and put in Pozantý juvenile prison one month ago, reacts to the allegations as follows; “How could we be expected to feel comfortable while hearing about sexual abuse that our children are subject to? On the other hand, my son has slimmed down in the prison where meals are too bad to eat. I cannot eat anything either while my son is hungry there. Every day of us passes in fear that my son could also be exposed to sexual abuses.”

Sociologist Menice Ürün, worker of the Ýþtar Counseling Center for Women of BDP Akdeniz Municipality, pointed out that the mentioned allegations concerned not only children but also their close circles and added; ”In the present situation it is seen that Kurdish mothers have no more tolerance left. These people who were forced to migrate from their hometowns in 90’s and settle in places they didn’t recognize are confined to a life they themselves don’t prefer. In addition, the wound of these people deepens as they go through serious traumas because of this kind of experiences. The screams of mothers should be heard now.”
