FARC celebrate assault on the Moncada Barracks
On 26 July, 60 years ago started the first armed action that initiated the heroic history of the Cuban Revolution. Fidel, Raul, Abel and a handful of dreamers and courageous fighters stormed the Moncada Barracks, Batista's symbol of tyranny. Almost six years later, after a hard struggle, the revolution triumphed on January 1, 1959.
In a press release the FARC underlined how "Cuba then became the beacon that in these six decades has illuminated the path of social and political transformations on the continent. Today, different processes of popular changes are being consolidated in several countries of the Americas that are grouped into political and economic blocks such as ALBA, CELAC and UNASUR. The Cuban revolution is not alone in Latin America: Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Uruguay and Argentina continue its exemplary march. In other countries, processes of unity and struggle are being consolidated; they announce new dawns of rebellion and victories against imperialism".
The FARC, which are currently engaged in peace negotiations with the Colombian government in La Habana, also underlined how "The assault on the Moncada Barracks profoundly impacted generations of Colombian fighters. Entire guerrilla detachments have grown under its inspiration and until today they are still struggling for peace, social justice and socialism".
The statement ends stressing that "After 60 years of the Moncada assault, the revolutionaries of our America are still struggling, following the heroic example of the fighters and martyrs of that day".
