Reports are coming through of a passenger ferry carrying up to 21 people hijacked in the Gulf of Izmit.
The ferry, called Kartepe, was heading towards Istanbul when it was apparently hijacked by 4 or 5 people. Some reports say only one person actually hijacked the ferry.
NTV channel said the assailants overpowered the captain of Kartepe ferry.
Three coastal guard boats are following the ferry and a helicopter has also been ordered to be ready to intervene if necessary, but they have been instructed only to follow and take no action for the time being.
Haber Turk said they spoke to the ferry's captain who allegedly said the hijackers were members of the PKK and added that the ferry might be heading towards Imrali island where PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan is held.
