Four years prison sentence asked for 23 students

Adana 7th Heavy Criminal Court asked 23 students of the Hatay Mustafa Kemal University to be sentenced to four and a half years imprisonment each for taking part in demonstrations on May First, Newroz on March 21 and March 8 International Women’s Day in Hatay.

The trial began in 2008 and is now coming to a close. The accusation for the defendants was “making propaganda for an illegal organization” and “being members of an illegal organization.”

Lawyer for the convicted college students, Vedat Özkan, will appeal and if necessary will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights, defined the penalties as merciless decisions.

He also blamed the government for amending the laws to allow everyone to be tried as a member of an illegal organization.
