France’s statement for “international court” in Rojava

First responses are coming in for the Northern and Eastern Syrian Federation’s call to set up an international court in the region for the trials of ISIS members.

France declared reservations for the idea to set up an international court. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said: “The setup of such a specialist international court is a complex operation. The implementation brings about legal and practical difficulties.”

According to the AFP, the FM spokesperson also said: “France prioritizes the trial of ISIS fighters in the same place they committed the crimes. This is a matter of both justice and security.”

The US, on the other hand, does not want to include the setup of such a court in the agenda just yet. US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey said they “are not looking into this option at this stage” and added that the US prioritizes pressuring countries to take back their own citizens whether they have committed crimes or not.

Northern and Eastern Syrian Autonomous Administration Spokesperson Luqman Ehme issued a statement on March 25 and called on the international public to take responsibility, adding that “action must be taken for the terrorists under arrest”.

Ehme said: “In particular, the countries with ISIS member citizens need to take these people back. Unfortunately, we haven’t received any response for this matter.”

Ehme said an international court must be set up for the trial of gang members in Northern and Eastern Syria, and added: “This court needs to be setup in the area where the crimes were committed. This way it would be possible to have just trials recognized by international law.”
