Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block candidates to the upcoming 12 June general election have sped up their work for the final rush. With 16 days to go enthusiasm is increasing and large crowds are on the streets to show their support to the block.
Thousands mobilized in many cities under the common slogan “Either freedom or nothing.” People in Diyarbakýr, Mardin, Siirt, Antep, Bingöl, Þýrnak, Adýyaman, Adana, Mersin, Osmaniye, Hatay, Van, Hakkari, Aðrý, Ardahan, Erzurum, Iðdýr and Bingöl organized mass rallies to support the independent candidates across Turkey. The huge crowds and enthusiasm have shown support and trust in the candidates, included those who are currently in prison.
Ýdris Baluken is one of them. He had been arrested almost two years ago during police and government’s joint operations against Kurdish politicians as known ‘historical trial’. Baluken will be free if he gets enough votes to get into Parliament. That is why the residents of Bingöl, Baluken’s city, are more excited about the election and electoral work. The citizens promised that they will set him free with their votes and carry him to parliament as their representative to change the city’s perennial ill fate.
Meanwhile many NGOs, professional organizations, like Bar Associations, Engineer Chambers, architects and above all women and women organizations announced their support for the block’s candidates.
Opening eight election offices and visiting 80 villages in the city, Mülkiye Birtane is a woman candidate of the block. She got not only all women support in Kars but also mass supports of NGOs and occupational associations.
Besides these people, some of the leftist parties announced their supports to the block candidates even their own candidates. Suppressed People’s Socialist Party (ESP) was one of these parties. According to ESP Chair Figen Yüksekdað’s press release, they will support the block candidates in the cities except seven places where their candidates are running for election.
The block promises hope for all opposite powers’ unity even after the election, said Þerafettin Elçi, one of bloc’s candidates in Diyarbakýr and senior Kurdish politician who spent his years in the prisons. He underlined that Kurds paid a heavy price during their long term struggle for democracy and freedom and now the time for using these rights all together.
