Freedom for Öcalan Vigil resumes after forced coronavirus break

The Freedom for Öcalan Vigil, which had been held for 8 years in the city of Strasbourg resumed after the forced break due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Freedom for Öcalan Vigil held in front of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg celebrated its 416th week. The action was temporarily suspended on 11 March, in compliance to the measures taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

This week the action resumed with members from Jinên Ciwanên Azad (JCA) and Tevgera Ciwanên Şoreşger (TCŞ).

The group, which resumed the action on Monday, is made up of Kurdish youth named Jiyan Aslan, Mervan Amed, Raman Bilal and Aram Semsur.

A strategic and important action

The young people made a statement about the Vigil and underlined that the action is of strategic importance.

Zülfü Bingöl, from the organizing committee of the Vigil, emphasized that the Kurds have been holding this action for 8 years and will continue until the freedom of Öcalan is achieved.

The Freedom for Öcalan Vigil began on 25 June 2012. The action before the Council of Europe is carried out in an area that also includes the European Court of Human Rights, the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) and the European Parliament.
