‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ events in Barcelona and Granada

Seminars and artistic events were organised in Barcelona and Granada as part of the global campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.

As part of the global campaign ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question’ launched by friends of the Kurdish people a year ago, various events were organised in Barcelona by the internationalist ‘Defend Kurdistan’ and the Jineology Committee.

An artistic performance was staged in Angel Pestana Nou Barris Square. Children showed interest in the performance, where an artistic drawing demanding ‘freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ was made on a pigeon pattern.

After the performance, a statement was made by the Defend Kurdistan Committee with the participation of a number of people regarding the global campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan. The committee condemned the absolute isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan in harsh terms and described the Turkish state’s policies as ‘fascism’. It underlined that the global campaign will surely succeed.

On the other hand, activists organised a seminar on ‘women's freedom and self-defence’ with a focus on Abdullah Öcalan's ‘Democratic Confederalism’ paradigm. In the seminar, which saw the participation of many people, the struggle for women's freedom and its universal dimensions as well as the social dimensions of the source of inequality were discussed.

In the city of Granada in the Andalucia Region of Spain, the Kurdistan Solidarity Network, Kurdistan Solidarity Group and La Tasquiva Group organised a joint event as part of the global campaign.

Intense discussions were held at the seminar, including many topics of Abdullah Öcalan's ‘Democratic Confederalism’ paradigm, such as ‘nation state’, ‘ecology’ and ‘democratic modernity’. On the basis of Democratic Modernity, evaluations were made on what role the Democratic Confederal system could play in the peoples' struggle for equality and freedom.

The seminar ended with the expression of the determination that the struggle for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan would continue.
