French Interior Minister on attack site

After the massacre at the Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, police attacked the people gathered in the area. The Minister of the Interior also made a statement at the scene.

People rushed to Strasbourg St. Denis, where the massacre took place, to protest the killings. Tension escalated after the Minister of Internal Affairs arrived at the scene.

Police used tear gas to disperse the people. The French Democratic Kurdish Council (CDK-F) is expected to make a press statement in front of the center at around 6.30pm.

The CDK-F called for a demonstration in Republique Square tomorrow, Saturday. Many leftist groups and associations said that they will take part in the action on their social media accounts.

Tension is still high in the neighbourhood.

Prime Minister: An heinous attack

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne called the attack a "heinous attack" and offered condolences to the families of the victims.

Darmanin: Protection for Kurdish Centre

After the attack on the Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin also came to the scene.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who came to Enghien street where the attack took place, said, "Three people lost their lives, two in front of the Cultural Center and one inside a restaurant."

The minister added that one person is still fighting for his life.

Minister Darmanin stated that the Kurdish association will be kept under "24-hour protection" from now on, and similarly, "Turkish diplomatic representation" will also be protected.

The Minister of Interior stated that they "did not know the motivations" of the arrested person, and claimed that he "obviously acted alone".

The Paris Prosecutor's Office announced that an investigation had been launched within the scope of "assassination, assassination attempt, armed wilful violence and violating the laws on possession of weapons".

Minister of Justice: A brutal attack

Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti condemned the attack, calling it "a brutal attack" on his Twitter account, and offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

Melenchon: Enough!

Many politicians reacted to the attack. Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the left-wing "La France Insoummise" party, said: "We are sad and angry at the terrorist attack targeting the Ahmet Kaya Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris."

Melenchon added: “Exactly 10 years ago, three female Kurdish politicians were murdered in the center of Paris. Enough!" He urged the authorities "to protect our Kurdish friends".

Olivier Faure, from the Socialist Party, demanded that "the legitimation of racism be abandoned."

Hidalgo: Kurds must live in safety

The Mayor of Paris Metropolitan Municipality, Anne Hidalgo, said: “The Kurdish community and all Paris people were the target of these assassinations carried out by an extreme right-wing activist. Wherever Kurds live, they should be able to live in peace and in a safe environment. Paris is with them more than ever in these dark hours.”
