Gerger: Capitalism survived crisis with wars and arms

Middle East specialist Haluk Gerger drew attention to the aggressive attitude Turkey has been displaying towards Syria and said that; “U.S. government may have assured Turkey that ‘there wouldn’t be a Kurdish issue in Syria’.

Gerger pointed to the current “loan crisis” in Europa and reminded that capitalism survived this crisis through “war and arms”. Noting that the Middle East is still an “open area” for the West, Gerger commented Turkey’s attitude towards Syria as “obvious war provocativeness”. Gerger linked Turkey’s aggressive attitude with the U.S. government’s probable promise that “attacks against Syria wouldn’t lead to a Kurdish formation unlike what happened in Iraq”. Gerger remarked that Turkey could play “a leading provocative role” regarding Iran, adding; “Turkey is a unfortunate soldier. The only favor it wants to gain is the head and right of Kurds”.

Answering ETHA’s questions, Gerger firstly called attention to the crisis the international capitalism has faced with. The crisis is feared to deepen, remarked Gerger and said the followings as to two significant consequences of this “loan crisis”; “First of all, democracy is receiving a major wound. Similarly to what happened at the times of military coups, technocrat governments have been formed with those who are appointed, not elected. Another point is also similar to what we see in periods of military coups; governments attack laborers, restrict social expenditures and increase taxes.”

Concerning the developments in Europe, Gerger said that; “The bourgeois democracy which was the achievement of laborers fell victim in the first stage. The gains of laborers are being killed now.”

Gerger recalled historical experiences, noting that capitalism provided a prescription of “armament expenditures and war” for the crisis. Gerger explained the reasons of this situation as follows; “Because war and armament have three aspects; they invigorate the economy, they are purchased by states and saled products are put into use and consumed.

The second point is the relation between war and stability. States appeal to internal strengthening in war periods and they therefore need to ensure support and internal discipline to be able to wage a war. Wars serve in interdigitating the community to ensure internal discipline. Metropolis countries are terrified of social unrest caused by attacks on laborers. Could we foresee what is happening now in the U.S., Greece and Spain? We will also see what will happen in Italy soon. Internal support is also important in controlling social unrest that can be prevented through outside adventures.

The third point is the market fight in wars, more importantly the need to share is vital. It is states, not companies that go bankrupt and can’t pay their debts. Therefore, the inadequacy of available means inevitably reveals a new communion struggle.”

Gerger made the following observations concerning the region of Middle East; “Among the regimes in the region, some of them attempt to hunt in this cloudy water, fortify their internal positions and try to suppress the internal opposition. Regimes that fail to suppress the opposition fall down in any case. These regimes are like vultures on carrion. They are after taking a share from that blood market.”

Gerger underlined that Assad’s regime in Syria is also a dictatorship and added; “Assad is the Ba’ath regime’s reflection on Arab lands, internalized with indisputable chauvinism and militarism. A regime which applies cruelty on its own people is a dictatorship.”

Concerning his comment that Turkey has displayed “obvious war provocativeness” in the recent period, Gerger said that; “Turkey’s attitude towards Syria could declare a war between any countries and in any period of the world. Turkey is as a matter of fact waging a war and it is displaying a strong provocativeness to leave Syria holding the bag.”

Answering the question why Turkey is displaying provocativeness, Gerger pointed to Turkey’s plans and mission in the region and said that; “First of all, Turkey knows that a seizure market will be set up in the region. There will be wars and after each war-what they call victory-, they will set up this seizure market in which Turkey wants to take place. Another reason is the fact that Turkey the Trojan horse, subcontractor and trigger man of the U.S. in the region. Turkey has never abandoned this mission since the World War II. The U.S. needs a striking power for its attack in the region. And the third factor of this provocativeness is the Kurdish issue.”

Turkey has a problem with the whole Kurdish presence, not North Kurdistan alone, remarked Gerger and commented the Kurdish presence in Syria and Iraq as Turkey’s inland problem. Gerger reminded of the occupation of Iraq and continued as follows; “Turkey now regrets for the war in Iraq. At least, it regrets not taking part in it because a Kurdish presence emerged there and it was protected with the lines of America. Turkey fears that the same thing will happen in Syria as well.”

Gerger commented that a probable intervention in Syria would be used by Turkey as an instrument for internal suppression and added; “Turkey applies a great suppression inside its borders. Besides the armed wing of the Kurdish movement and Kurdish politicians and intellectuals, each opposition outside the official ideology is also subjected to this suppression to which we can show the most recent KCK detentions as an example.”

Investigative author Gerger remarked that Turkey became stronger owing to the economic crisis in the U.S. and said the followings; “Turkey sees that the bargaining area has been opened. Separately, it seeks an assurance that the experience in Iraq won’t be repeated again. The fall of Syrian government may be followed by the fall of Iran as well. Both countries have lands of Kurdistan and Turkey doesn’t want the formation of a constitution in these countries similar to that in South Kurdistan. In other words, Turkey wants the red lines to be drawn by itself, not by the U.S. By laying the groundwork of this purpose now with attempts such as ‘intermediate range’ and ‘buffer zone’, Turkey is planning not only to prevent a new Kurdish formation in Syria but also to besiege South Kurdistan.”

Gerger remarked that Turkey’s attitude towards Iran was also determined in accordance with the U.S.’s plan and said that; “Turkey looks as if objecting to the intervention in Iran but these are nothing more than empty words. The Trojan horse role given by imperialism and America to Turkey and the AKP government requires to establish a dialogue with the peoples in the region. However, that Trojan horse consists of militarism and soldiers, as seen from the examples in the history as well. They open the horse and release soldiers as militarism comes to the fore now. When this is the case, Turkey’s speeches, which pretended to protect Iran, lose their meaning. Turkey’s speeches were as a matter of fact aiming to convey the plans of the West and America to Iran, not to protect the Iran. Turkey has already unveiled itself in this respect.”

Gerger reminded prime minister Erdoðan’s words “What has NATO to do in Libya, Gerger continued as follows; “However, Turkey took part in the intervention which came soon after. The things that happened in Libya and Syria and will also happen in Iran when the time, which seems to be approaching, has come. Besides Obama’s statement that ‘each possibility is laid on the table’, Israel says that ‘It is time to attack Iran’, while it at the same time plots assassinations within Iran’s boundaries. They are killing Iranian scientists, which was earlier made in Iraq as well. They are laying the groundwork now.”

Investigative author Haluk Gerger called attention to the early-warning radar system planned to be stationed in Kürecik district of Malatya and said; “With this step, Turkey has taken a stance in the counter front.”

Gerger remarked that Iran wasn’t a sitting target for imperialists owing to its “security hinterland” which starts from Syria, noting that that they therefore plan to fall Syria in the first instance. “Turkey will no doubt play a provocative role in relation to Iran. Turkey is an unfortunate soldier. The only favor it wants to gain is the head and right of Kurds”, added Gerger.
