German court decides against YPG flag ban

Aachen District Court has rejected an application to sentence a person for the use of a YPG flag as a profile picture on social media.

Aachen District Court said that the issue of a penalty order for the use of "symbols of a prohibited association or its replacement organization" is rejected and refused to sentence a person who set YPG flag as a profile picture on December 11, 2017.

The court referred to the decision by German Federal Government’s statement in April 2017 which said that flags of the People's and Women's Defense Units YPG and YPJ in Syria are not strictly prohibited.

German government banned Kurdish symbols, including posters of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan and YPG and YPJ flags in March 2017.
