AKP government’s fears continue on the anniversary of Gezi resistance which was an uprising of the oppressed for honor and freedom.
AKP once again declared a state of emergency in and around Taksim. Thousands of police officers and water cannons were stationed in and around Gezi park, which is closed to public access. Hundreds of police roam within the park and the Taksim subway system has been shut down.
Families of the martyrs gathered in the TMMOB building in Meşelik Street but the police cordoned the street and closed it to public access.
Despite the police siege, hundreds of people met in front of the HDK building and started to march towards Taksim square. An HDP banner from the march said ‘We are everywhere’ and depicted the photos of Gezi martyrs. Families of Gezi martyrs joined the march where HDP parliamentarian candidates such as ESP president Sultan Ulusoy and ÖDP co-president Alper Taş accompany the protestors.
“Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere is resistance” and “This is only the beginning, the struggle continues” are some of the phrases often chanted by the protestors. The police stopped the march by force and the protestors began a sit-down in response.
