Hatip Dicle's lawyers demand Kurdish deputy's release

DEP (Democracy Party) former deputy and BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) MP Hatip Dicle's lawyers have applied to Diyarbakır 6th High Criminal Court demanding the release of the Kurdish deputy who has been jailed for more than four years for allegedly spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization.

Dicle's lawyers called attention to the recent legal arrangements reducing lengthy detentions and remarked that the Kurdish deputy has been unlawfully held under arrest for the last 4,5 years.

The court board has gathered upon the application by Dicle's lawyers and is expected to decide on lawyers' demand this evening.

The Supreme Electoral Board (YSK) revoked Dicle's mandate on 21st June 2011 after he was elected as an independent candidate in Diyarbakır in elections on 12nd June.

The politician served a 10-year prison sentence for the reason of speaking Kurdish in the Turkish Parliament in the 1990s, together with Leyla Zana. In 2009 Hatip Dicle was arrested once again within the scope of the KCK case on account of juridically untenable allegations. Just before the election the YSK excluded him from standing as a candidate, but nevertheless, accredited his candidature following mass popular protests.
