Have your hair cut to protest against students in prison

DIHA news agency is reporting about a curious protest action in Ankara. Academics, politicians, artists and many activists had their hair cut to protest against the arrests of 23 students.

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Istanbul Deputy Sýrrý Süreyya Önder and Lecturer Prof. Dr. Mithat Sancar were the first to have their hair cut on Thursday.

In addition, 40,000 petitions were sent to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to demand to be freed the imprisoned students.

Underlining that the number of students in jail has reached 500, demonstrators and petitioners condemned the government’s action against any dissent and promised to continue their action until the students are released.

23 out of 54 detained students were jailed for protesting the death of retired teacher Metin Lokumcu in Hopa, a district of Artvin, during another protest demonstration against PM Erdoðan’s visit. Lokumcu died after having a hard attack due to intense tear gas used by police to disperse the demonstrators on May 31.

However, ten detained students in Dersim are still being kept at the Dersim Police Headquarters for two days. Police took them into custody from their home allegedly for “helping the illegal organization.”
