Deputy Secretaries General of the Party of European Socialists, Giacomo Filibeck and Yonnec Polet, met in Brussels with a HPD delegation chaired by Prof Mithat Sancar, Co-chair of HDP, an associate member of the PES.
A HPD delegation chaired by Mithat Sancar, Co-chair of HDP, met the deputy Secretaries General of the Party of European Socialists, Giacomo Filibeck and Yonnec Polet, in Brussels.
Following their discussion, the PES expressed its support and solidarity to HDP as it fights to defend its legitimacy to exist as a democratic political organisation, the rule of law, and human rights in Turkey. The PES "strongly encourages the democratic forces in Turkey, particularly our sister parties HDP and CHP, to remain firm and continue their struggle."
PES said: "Turkey, as a member of the Council of Europe and as a candidate for EU membership, has to guarantee its citizens free and fair elections respecting international standards. To this end, all democratic political organisations and candidates from across the political landscape must be able to work and campaign freely, and the press must be able to fully accomplish their work of objective reporting."
