Ali Ürküt, HDP deputy co-chair made a written statement today to mark the anniversary of the Soma Massacre.

“The Soma Massacre is not a disaster”, he said. “For many years, the neoliberal policies have been the inevitable consequence of the capitalist way of production, which are based on the logic of little cost-much production, little time -much work.”

Ürküt noted that no measures were taken to end the fatal accidents at work despite the five years that have passed. "The worse of the disaster was that the owner of the Soma Coal Enterprise Inc. and the number one responsible for the massacre, Can Gürkan, was released after a sentence which was in fact a reward.”

Ali Ürküt also said: “The precondition to prevent fatal accidents at work in mines is to stop the application of royalties and to operate the mines without any profit for the purpose of production. Without the supervision of the necessary audits and controls, production should not be carried out. The labor law, trade unions law, collective bargaining and strike law should be rethought and re-elaborated.”
