HDP members open their homes to earthquake victims in Izmir

While the death toll rose to 112 in the earthquake in Izmir, the HDP Provincial Organization, which established a Coordination Desk, launched a campaign to share their rooms with the people whose houses have been damaged.

Death toll in the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Izmir province on Friday, October 30, whose epicenter was Seferihisar district, rose to 112.

In the medium intensity earthquake, 8 buildings collapsed and hundreds of buildings were heavily damaged. Search and rescue are still continuing in the concrete blocks of 4 buildings.

Many Izmir residents who are still afraid to enter their homes stay in tents. In the earthquake region where the lack of coordination is felt, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has devoted all its strength to meeting the needs of the earthquake victims.

HDP provincial branch, which has established a Coordination Desk in Manavkuyu neighborhood in Bayraklı district, which was affected by the earthquake the most, spoke about its activities to the Mesopotamya Agency.

RENT AND LACK OF INSPECTION KILLED THE PEOPLE

HDP Provincial Co-chair Abdülkadir Baydur said that some regions in Bayraklı have been just recently zoned for construction, and emphasized the fact that most of the region is not suitable for construction as a ground.

"WHERE ARE THE PUBLIC'S TAXES?"

Expressing that the most criticised and voiced problem by the citizens is the issue of earthquake taxes, Baydur reminded that the people have a serious complaint about where these taxes go.

100 THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE HOUSING PROBLEM

Baydur continued; “The biggest problem is with housing. Where will these people stay? This is one of the most frequently asked and complained problems by earthquake victims. Of course, the addressee of this is the government. As a party, we try to meet this need through solidarity. As far as we have observed, 100 thousand citizens are faced with the housing problem. Winter is ahead of us. What will happen to the citizens who are stuck in tents if it rains? We are not sure if the government will take any action.”

'DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IS SLOW'

Baydur noted that the damage assessment is running slowly and that the citizens also complain about this issue. As a solution to the housing problem of the earthquake victims, HDP members opened their doors to the earthquake victims. Baydur called for increased solidarity, adding; "We annouce our solidarity to all earthquake victims whereever we go".

HDP IN THE EARTHQUAKE REGION SINCE THE FIRST DAY

The other HDP İzmir Provincial Co-chair, Besriye Tekgür, also said that HDP deputies, provincial and district organizations and members have been helping the people since the first moments of the earthquake. Tekgür stated that the aids are collected in certain places, so they make an effort to meet the demands of the people in the places where aids are not provided, and that earthquake victims are facing lack of tents, heating and electricity problems.

'PEOPLE FIND SOLUTIONS BY THEMSELVES'

Tekgür continued as follows: “People receive and distribute aids only in certain places. Some people may be deprived of assistance. For example, the situation is more crucial in this region, but there are shortcomings in some other regions as well, concerning tents in particular. In fact, this coordination should be provided in all regions struck by the earthquake, not in one region alone.”
