HDP MP Gergerlioğlu returns to parliament: "We resisted and won"

To promote peace is not a crime, said HDP MP Gergerlioğlu whose seat in the parliament was returned after his release from prison in accordance with the Constitutional Court decision that his rights had been violated by his removal from parliament.

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu has retrieved his mandate in the Parliament.

The judicial decision has been read out in Parliament to give Gergerlioğlu his mandate back.

Gergerlioğlu, who was released from prison on July 6 after the Constitutional Court (AYM) ruled that his rights had been violated, submitted a petition to the Parliament for the return of his deputyship.

Speaking to ANF, Gergerlioğlu stated that the decision belonged to the people after they submitted the petition, and that his trial had been a waste of time.

Gergerlioğlu recalled that his membership in parliament was revoked after he shared a tweet. “The Supreme Court decisions normally take a few years, but the process developed very fast in my case. Because I had revealed strip-searches and human rights violations. To promote peace is not a crime, it is a freedom of expression with the decision of the Constitutional Court. Moreover, this decision is a landmark not only for me, but also for academics for peace. The Constitutional Court has revealed with its decision that asking for peace is not a crime. The people resisted and we won.”

“We have been against all coups from the very beginning. However, elected mayor were replaced by trustees, hundreds and thousands of people were dismissed, and I myself was fired by a governmental degree because of a tweet I had shared on social media. But my party offered me a seat in the parliament and since then I have tried to raise everyone's voice in the Parliament. I also addressed the problems of the Uyghur Turks in the Parliament and the government ally MHP was disturbed by this. I was dragged away from the Parliament after MHP leader Bahçeli said 'kick this guy off ' during my Justice Vigil in the Parliament. I was taken out of my house and arrested. A lawsuit was filed against our party ahead of the MHP congress. That was a congress gift to the MHP. But just as academics and students from the Boğaziçi University resisted the trustee rector, we also resisted and won.”
