HDP MPs protest in front of parliament against the isolation of Öcalan

Police prevent HDP MPs from gathering in front of the Justice Ministry in Ankara to protest against the isolation of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. The MPs therefore protest in front of the parliament.

After the protest against the isolation of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in front of the Ministry of Justice was prevented by Turkish police, MPs of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) are gathering in front of the parliament in Ankara to protest against the situation on the prison island of Imrali. The MPs had started with a vigil in front of the Ministry of Justice on 21 December. On Monday, HDP MPs Tayip Temel, Abdullah Koç, Kemal Peköz, Muazzez Orhan, Celadet Gaydalı and Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit left for the Justice Ministry again. They were stopped by the police at the entrance to the parliament.

The police said they had been ordered to stop the MPs and would not allow them to go to the Ministry of Justice. The police threatened journalists who wanted to document the vigil and pushed them away.

Outside parliament, HDP deputy co-chair Tayip Temel made a statement and said: "Today, we were targeted in a new way. We were blocked at the Dikmen Gate of the parliament without a written decision and without a legal basis. We were prevented from going to the Ministry of Justice. We are standing here to protest against breach of law, arbitrariness and unlawful practices. We will make a detailed statement in Parliament today on the isolation and critical situation in Imralı. It reflects the defining situation in Turkey at the moment. We will be persistent and firm in this vigil. Everyone should know that."
