HDP Van: Bans will not stop us!

The HDP's "democracy march" to Ankara is set to begin on Monday. In several provinces, a ban on entrance and leave as well as events have been issued to block the HDP initiative.

In the province of Van there has been a ban on events for 1,400 days. Now, the governor's office has also hastily banned people from entering and leaving the province in order to prevent the "Democracy March" of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) to Ankara, which is to start on Monday.

Ökkeş Kawa, co-chairman of the HDP provincial association in Van, has described the order as an "offensive to stop the HDP", saying "In Van, a ban has been in place for years anyway. There is a state of emergency within the state of emergency."

The local politician announced that the HDP will not be blocked by the ban: "We will continue our visits to families and businesses. We will receive our delegation from Hakkari at the Hitit petrol station. But Van is already sealed off and we don't know what will happen on the way. We are expecting the delegation on Monday at about 2 pm."

The march is to lead from Edirne in western Turkey and Hakkari on the eastern state border to Ankara within five days. In Edirne, too, the governor has issued a ban on admission and events. Van is the first planned stop after Hakkari. With this action, the HDP wants to promote a democratic struggle and to unite the opposition to the AKP/MHP regime.
