HDP: We'll continue our solidarity with the honorable resistance

“We condemn the manner of rule that ignores the deaths instead of stopping them.”

Ayşe Acar Başaran, HDP Spokesperson for Human Rights and Legal Procedures Commission, Member of the Central Executive Board and MP for Batman released a statement regarding the ongoing hunger strike resistance and sacrifice actions carried out by prisoners who have ended their life to protest the isolation imposed on Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

24-year-old Ayten Beçet took her own life at the Gebze Closed Prison for Women to protest the inhuman, unlawful and illegitimate isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan at İmralı.

Uğur Şakar, Zülküf Gezen and lastly Ayten Beçet took their own lives with the demand of the termination of the isolation since the beginning of the hunger strikes on November 8, 2018. As Leyla Güven's hunger strike on the 137th day continues with the involvement of deputies Dersim Dağ, Tayip Temel and Murat Sarısaç, thousands of prisoners, activists and politicians in Maxmur, Wales, Germany and Erbil, the silence and indifference of the AKP government is still continuing.

HDP stated that; “While these three people risk death to end Turkey's insistence on unlawfulness, those who incite hatred and discriminate in the public squares try to collect votes through the illegitimate isolation.”

The statement continued; “Hunger strikes and the actions to put an end to life are also a struggle against the destruction of the values of our people. The three people who have sacrificed their lives to end the isolation will be immortalized in the memory of the society and will be remembered throughout history. However, history will judge those who pave the way for these deaths."

HDP stressed that the government, which is indifferent to the absolute isolation that is applied in defiance of the constitution, laws and international democratic conventions, aims to suppress the hunger strikes which are constitutionally within the scope of the right to resist in an anti-democratic way.

HDP statement added; “Despite all the oppression and intimidation policies of the AKP-MHP fascist governance, we will continue our solidarity with this rightful and honorable resistance, and we will provide all kinds of support to publicize the facts.”
