International Human Rights Week (10-17 December) will be celebrated in Diyarbakýr with activities organized jointly by five civil society organizations. The activities will be performed in a tent named “Human Rights and Freedom”.
The activities by IHD (Human Rights Association) Diyarbakýr branch, MAZLUMDER, TÝHV (Human Rights Foundation of Turkey), Diyarbakýr Bar Association and Chamber of Doctors have started yesterday with a march and press release joined by all NGOs and people in the city.
The press release was followed by the "Find the disappeared, judge the perpetrators" titled sit in, staged every week by the IHD and relatives of the disappeared in front of the Monument of Right to Live at Kosuyolu Park.
Following the press release, an exhibition with the theme “On which way is Diyarbakýr Prison No 5?” was opened within the scope of the week’s event table.
The second day of the week, December 11 will also witness various activities in the “Human Rights and Freedom” tent which will be put up today in front of the Human Rights Monument. Human rights defenders and representatives of human rights organizations will keep watch and ward in the tent which will stay open for a week. Tent activities in this respect include panel, documentary display, music performance and a photograph exhibition as reflection of human rights violations in Kurdistan region.
One other activity of 12 December will be to send cards to human rights defenders and politicians behind bars. A seminar on Human Rights will be held within the week at two schools and many women associations in the city.
The struggle for human rights and violations in Turkey will also be addressed by many local televisions of the city along the week.
Banners and billboards on the week will appear at various places of the city throughout the week.
The traditional “closing reception” at the end of the week will not be performed this year because of the losses of lives in Van earthquake and clashes in the region.
