Hunger strike could become death fast

Diyarbakýr City General Council chair Fatma Sümbül who is among the hunger strikers protesting against the isolation of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan as well as the military and political operations said the protest could change its nature. Sümbül said the hunger strike could be turned into a death fast unless the demands of the protesters are accepted. Every day new people are joining in the hunger strike. On Saturday it was the people of Kartal district in Istanbul and the Kaðýzman district if Kars.

Forty City General Council members had taken over the hunger strike in Kayapýnar (Diyarbakýr) on Friday.

The Confederation of Public Workers Union (KESK) Diyarbakýr Branches visited the hunger strikers on Saturday despite the police intervention. Union of Health Workers (SES) Diyarbakýr Secretary Ramazan Kaval said during the visit, "Instead of replying to our demands, they are increasing arrests and oppression."
