As DTK co-chair and HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven, who leads the resistance demanding the end of isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, has reached day 144 of her hunger strike, thousands of prisoners in various jails also continue their fast.
Sedat Akın was in Erzincan T Type Prison when he went on an indefinite hunger strike and he was released on the 44th day of fast. Now Akın is on the 84th day of fast, having continued the protest action at his home in Batman after his release.
The hunger strike activist went to the polling station on a wheelchair and cast his vote for local elections in Batman. He was accompanied and provided assistance by his family members and administrators of Human Rights Association (IHD) Batman branch.
In a short comment after casting his vote, Akın said; “We will expel the trustees here today. There is a great resistance. Everyone should cast their votes. The struggle will end with victory which is close.”
İhsan Sinmiş, who is also on an indefinite and non-alternating hunger strike since March 1st, when he started his protest while in Silivri Prison, cast his vote with his family in Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul where he has been staying since his release from prison.
Gurbet Ektiren went on hunger strike on January 15 while she was held in Bakırköy Women’s Closed Prison and was released on March 8 since when she continues her action at her home in Mardin’s Derik district.
With the help of her relatives, Ektiren went to the polling station and cast her vote today.
Ektiren said; “Today is an important day for us. Everyone should cast their votes and nobody should leave the polling stations to claim their will. Every single vote matters for the future of the Kurdish people and the peoples of Turkey. One vote can change everything. We have cast our vote today to make sure that a new phase begins with regard to breaking the isolation. Let everyone know; we will definitely win.”
