A group of students at Kocaeli University (KOÜ) have gone on an indefinite and alternate hunger strike in solidarity with that of students at Bingöl University which is going on since 24 February.
The indefinite and alternate hunger strike at Bingöl University was initiated by Bingöl University Students' Union (BÜÖ-DER) against the unjust implementations of the university administration, including investigations and disciplinary punishments.
Members of the Democratic Patriot Students' Assemblies (DEMYÖM) at Kocaeli University started their strike in front of the Social Facilities on Umuttepe Campus, opening banners which read “To a free future with organised youth” and “We salute the Bingöl resistance”.
Hüseyin Erpolat on behalf of the students joining the protest said that they as 20 students have started an indefinite and alternate hunger strike in solidarity with the Bingöl University students against investigations and punishments. Erpolat stressed that their protest will continue until the investigations are retracted.
On the other hand, 29 students at Eren University in Bitlis have also started a hunger strike in protest against the university administration's psychological pressure and blacklisting of students and in demand of equal, scientific and mother-tongue education.
Students started the strike in the university canteen which they raided and closed whilst chanting slogans in protest against the police presence and repression at universities.
Large numbers of police teams have surrounded the campus area in the wake of the protest by students.
