IHD appealed to CPT for Öcalan
Human Rights Association (ÝHD) appealed to the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) concerning the isolation on PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan and prisoners Bayram Kaymaz, Hasbi Aydemir, Cumali Karsu, Þeyhmus Poyraz and Hakký Alpan who are also held in Ýmralý F-Type Prison and denied meeting with their lawyers as well.
The application voiced concerns about the denial of Öcalan’s meeting with his lawyers and his state of health as he has been isolated from the outside world since 27 July 2011. In the petition presented to CPT, IHD called attention to intentional prevention of visit right of Öcalan’s lawyers on the grounds of “bad weather” and ‘defective coaster’ as a response to weekly application of lawyers to visit their client. IHD also demanded CPT to visit Ýmralý F-Type High Security Prison with a committee to be established for this purpose and to take steps concerning the isolation Turkey executes on Öcalan.
The petition also called attention to the arrest of Öcalan’s 35 lawyers on November 22,2011 and underlined that the accusation against lawyers was inadmissible. The IHD petititon pointed out that national and international provisions of law were violated by the executions implemented in Ýmralý Prison.
Noting that the prevention of mentioned prisoners’ visit right was an arbitrary treatment of authorities, the petition said that; “Millions of people both in Turkey and other parts of the world are concerned about the physical conditions of Kurdish Political Movement’s leader Abdullah Öcalan whom they declared as “authorized to speak for them” in the year of 2003. On the other hand, around seven thousand PKK and KCK arrestees in Turkish prisons have started an alternate hunger strike to protest this isolation. The current situation shows that there is a remarkable tension in the prisons in Turkey.”
The petition ended calling on the CPT to pay a soonest visit to Ýmralý F-Type High Security Prison in order to make the necessary examination in consideration of the present urgency case.
