IHD to appeal to CPT for Öcalan

Human Rights Association (ÝHD) will appeal to the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in respect to the isolation on PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan has been prevented from seeing his lawyers since 27 July 2011 on grounds of “bad weather” and “problem with the boat”. While demonstrations against Öcalan’s isolation continue in many cities across the country, IHD has completed its report following a series of examinations on Öcalan’s health problems and the implementation of the isolation. The report will also be presented to CPT during the appeal which will demand CPT to establish a committee in order to make an examination in Ýmralý Prison and to take steps concerning the isolation Turkey executes.

CPT has so far remained silent about the isolation on PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan and it is therefore often targeted by the protests of Kurds in Europe.
