Iraqi Minister says Turkey pledged to increase water flow

Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources said on Saturday that Turkey had pledged to increase its release of water downstream into Iraq.

The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources announced on Saturday that Turkey had pledged to improve water release in the face of the scarcity crisis that Iraq is suffering from.

The ministry's spokesman, Ali Radi, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that a virtual meeting was held via the Internet between the Minister of Water Resources, Engineer Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, the Special Envoy of the Iraqi Prime Minister for Water Affairs, and the envoy of the Turkish President for Water Affairs, Veysel Eroğlu.

He stated, "The meeting discussed the status of water imports of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers entering Iraq, in the presence of the technical advisor to the ministry and the director general of the National Center for Water Resources Management," noting that "the Iraqi side affirmed its adherence to the policy of dialogue and understandings with upstream countries."

Radi confirmed that "the Turkish side pledged during the meeting to increase water flow to Iraq to bypass the scarcity crisis it is suffering.”
