Bodil Ceballos, a Green Party Swedish MP and party's spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, has presented a parliamentary question to the Swedish Parliament about the situation of 105 jailed journalists in Turkey and the case of murdered Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.
The parliamentary question, “Freedom of expression and press in Turkey” pointed out to the “arrest policy” conducted against Kurds since 2009. It was underlined that out of around seven thousand detainees, nearly four thousand would most probably be sentenced for expressing their thoughts.
The parliamentary question also criticized the court decision in the recently ended case of journalist Hrant Dink and reminded that Hrant Dink and writer Orhan Pamuk had been tried on the grounds of “insulting Turkishness” because they express their thoughts about the Armenian genocide.
Bodil Ceballos demanded the parliamentary question to be answered by Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt whom she also proposed to discuss with the Turkish government about the situation of jailed journalists. Cebellos also asked Bildt whether he would take any action to bring these subjects to the agenda of the European Union.
Ceballos stated that the Swedish government shouldn’t remain silent about the violation of human rights as well as the freedoms of thought and press by neighboring countries.
