January sees record number of political murders in Colombia

During the month of January 2020 the number of political murders in Colombia reached a record figure, the highest of the last 5 years.

A report presented by the civil organization Mission of Electoral Observation (MOA) certifies that the number of murders of political, social and community leaders in Colombia reached its highest figure for the last 5 years.

According to MOA data during the past month, 19 killings of political and social leaders were recorded, while the number of direct threats to people, due to their role as leaders, rose to 32.

Political violence affected 34 municipalities in 15 of the country's departments.

The report emphasizes that several of the municipalities where murders and threats occurred are areas of implementation of the development plans, contemplated in the Havana Peace Agreement, signed between the State and the former FARC guerrillas. According to the Final Peace Agreement, these territories should have special collective and individual protection schemes by the Government. However, this is not happening.
