Journalists Þýk and Þener remain in prison

The first hearing of the so called Oda Tv trial was held on Tuesday and ended as it was expected with an adjournment. Journalists Ahmet Þýk and Nedim Þener, who are among the people tried, have spent nine months in prison. The next hearing will be on 26 December.

At Tuesday's hearing defense lawyers demanded the presiding judge be replaced. The request was motivated by the fact that the judge would not be impartial as he was already involved in a trial against one of the journalists.

Thirteen people are accused of involvement in an alleged plot to topple the Turkish government.

The case is held at the Ýstanbul 16th High Criminal Court. It is alleged that those who ran the news website odatv.com have aid and abet the so called Ergenekon organization, a shadow Gladio style organization accused of plotting to overthrow the government. The prosecutors say odatv.com was some kind of media center for the organization.
