Kenan Evren wasn’t asked about tortures and executions!

During his four-hour testimony Monday, leader of the military coup of 12 September 1980 Kenan Evren, noted that he doesn’t regret what he did and would do the same under those conditions if he were entitled to. It was learned that Evren wasn’t directed any questions about disappearances in custody, extrajudicial executions and tortures.

31 years after the coup, a prosecutor for the first time asked Evren “Why did you do”.

Within the scope of investigation, a former chief of General Staff and seventh president of Turkey Kenan Evren gave testimony to Specially Authorized Ankara Deputy Prosecutor Hüseyin Görüsen. During the interrogation which lasted about 3.5 hours, the questions directed to Evren were all about the process before the Sept. 12, 1980 coup d'état.

Evren answered Görüsen’s question “Do you regret” as follows; “I don’t regret. If I were in charge under the same circumstances, I would do it again.”

During his testimony concerning the events before the coup, Evren reportedly said; “A former prime minister Nihat Erim, a full general and retired Admiral Kemal Kayacan died in those days in the country.

Evren reportedly stated that they had to wait for a long time before staging the coup but had to do it as the events didn’t pass off.

“The Assembly was not able to function and many events were happening every day. We had to stage the coup.” recorded Evren.

Prosecutor Görüsen asked Evren how the events suddenly ended after the coup despite the declaration of a state of siege before September 12, when security was to a large extent passed to the army. Evren gave the following answer; “The events didn’t end on September 12. Turkey changed back in a six-month period.”

Evren expressed their reasons for the coup as follows; “102 people died during the events in Maras and 80 people in Corum. A former President Nihat Erim, Admiral Kemal Kayacan were killed with an assassination. Serious events were happening all over the country. We seized the country’s control because we had to. We in fact didn’t want to do it. For the prevention of incidents, we sent a warning letter to the government through the President in December of 1979 but the events didn’t end. And after the coup, we gave and effort and managed to go to democracy as soon as possible.”

It was learned that Evren wasn’t asked any questions about the disappearances in custody, extrajudicial executions, tortures and inhuman treatments in prisons after the coup.

Meanwhile, Tahsin Þahinkaya, the commander of the Air Force at the time, will give testimony on Wednesday at his current treatment place GATA Haydarpasa Hospital.
