The Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK) organized a one-day stoppage across the country in response to the government's proposal for a 14 percent + 9 percent salary increase in six-month increments for 2024, and a 6 percent + 5 percent salary increase for 2025. The action was a success all over the country.
ANKARA
The members of KESK Ankara Branches Platform, gathered in Sakarya Square. Speaking at the action, KESK co-chair Şükran Kablan Yeşil said: "With this action we are responding to the government's first offer which equals ignoring us. This offer imposes conditions of misery. We will continue to protest and ask for a decent wage above the poverty line."
Yeşil underlined that the inflation target of the Central Bank is 33 percent for 2024 and 15 percent for 2025, and said: "A total of more than 6 million public workers and retirees have been waiting for the proposal of the public employer, namely the government, for 13 days since the meeting held on 1 August. That proposal was finally announced."
AMED
Communication and Postal Workers' Union (Haber Sen) members gathered in front of the Postal Processing Center (PIM) Communication and Postal Workers' Union (Haber Sen), to express their demands for a decent life.
KESK Amed Branches Platform also came together at Dağ Kapı Square in Sur district. KESK's statement was supported by civil society organizations, political party representatives in the city, as well as Green Left Party Amed deputies Serhat Eren and Adalet Kaya.
Road, Construction, Infrastructure, Public Works and Land Registry Cadastre Public Workers Union (Yapı-Yol Sen) Amed Branch president, Sıraç Çelik, said that they will continue to struggle.
SES Amed Branch co-chair Yildiz Orak Ok said: “This is just the beginning. We will continue the struggle. The winners are always those who fight."
MERSIN
KESK Mersin Branches Platform met at the Özgür Children's Park. Green Left Party Mersin Deputy Perihan Koca, Mersin Labor and Democracy Platform components and many people attended the statement. Education Sen Mersin Branch co-chair Mahmut Sümbül said that the first proposal of the government regarding the collective agreement did not include the demands of the workers.
ANTALYA
Workers also protested in Antalya, where they held a press conference. KESK Antalya Branches Platform Term spokesperson Nurettin Sönmez said that they will fight for their most just demands.
ADANA
KESK Adana Branches Platform organized a press statement in front of Adana Metropolitan Municipality. KESK Adana Branches Platform Term spokesperson Ahmet Aydoğan underlined that the government is mocking the workers by offering an increase in misery even below certain inflation rates that the Central Bank targets but will not keep.
MARDIN
KESK Mardin Branches Platform made a statement in front of the Social Security Institution (SGK) Mardin Provincial Directorate. KESK Mardin Branch Term spokesperson Fırat Ergül vowed that workers would continue the fight.
URFA
Many union members attended the statement made by KESK Urfa Branches Platform in front of Ahmet Bahçıvan Business Center.
Press, Communication and Postal Workers' Union (Haber-Sen) Riha Provincial Representative Yasin Beyaz called on all public workers and unions to fight together against the TIS negotiations.
ADIYAMAN
KESK Adiyaman Branches Platform made a press statement regarding the Collective Bargaining Agreement (TIS) negotiations in front of the Democracy Park in the city center.
Zeynal Polat, Term spokesperson of KESK Adiyaman Branches Platform said: "We are against this monstrous system that wants to condemn us to poverty.”
ISTANBUL
The Health and Social Service Workers' Union (SES) also held a work stoppage.
SES Şişli Branch co-chair Fadime Kavak Sevim said: “Not a single sentence was included in the announced proposal regarding the common demands of all public workers, such as rent assistance, bonuses, nursery aid, 3600 additional indicators given before the election, and the abolition of interviews. We will not accept this and will continue to fight.”
IZMIR
Members of KESK Izmir Branches Platform made a press statement in the city to protest the government’s proposal. HDP Izmir deputy Burcugül Çubuk, civil society organizations, rights defenders and political party representatives supported the statement.
KESK Izmir Branches Platform Term spokesperson Mustafa Güven said that “the government takes decisions based on fake inflation figures.”
