KON-MED co-chair calls for participation in actions against occupation

Zübeyde Zümrüt, co-chair of the KON-MED, the largest umbrella organization of the Kurdish Diaspora in Germany, has called on Kurds to take to the streets in all European cities on July 3 to protest the Turkish invasion in southern Kurdistan, northern Iraq.

The ‘Freedom Vigil’ carried out in Strasbourg, France, which demands the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, has entered its 10th year. The vigil was launched on June 25, 2012.

A group of activists from Oldenburg, Germany, took over the vigil in its 470th week.

Zübeyde Zümrüt, who participated in the vigil, stated that the current political landscape is a continuation of the conspiracy against the Kurdish leader in 1999. “Neither the wars in the Middle East nor the occupation in Bashur (South) and the whole of Kurdistan will stop until the isolation is lifted and Öcalan is freed,” she said.

Emphasizing that Öcalan should be released for a lasting peace, Zümrüt noted that, “It is necessary to introduce a spirit of total mobilization in order to remove the isolation and stop the occupation in South Kurdistan.”

“There is only one way to stop the genocide. The Kurdish people should reclaim this struggle and their own children. The people of Kurdistan paid a heavy price. Therefore, it is our duty to act together and to protect Kurdistan.”

“We call on the people of Kurdistan and their friends to participate in actions in all regions on July 3. Let's defend Kurdistan together with the spirit of Kobane and let's push fascism out of Kurdistan lands,” she concluded.
