Kurdish editor sentenced to 138 years in prison

Azadiya Welat Journal former editor-in-Chief and Publisher Emine Demir was sentenced to 138 years heavy imprisonment with the allegation of making organization propaganda with a news published. It caught the attention that the sentence of 24-year-old journalist was given short before Abdullah Gül visit to Diyarbakýr.

The trial of Azadiya Welat Journal former editor-in-Chief and Publisher Emine Demir was held in Diyarbakir 5th High Criminal Court. While trial pending Emine Demir didn't attend the hearing, her lawyer Servet Özen appeared.

During the advocating, Özen asked the consideration of the writings and news mentioned in the case within the scope of freedom of thought and expression and demanded the acquittal of his client.

The court board, after a short break, sentenced the 24-year-old journalist Emine Demir to 84 times a year and 6 months, total to 138 years imprisonment with the allegation of committing crime on behalf of the organization despite not being a member in accordance with TCK 314th article and making the propaganda of the organization in accordance with TMK 7-2 article in 84 separate reports published in 2008-2009.

The court also issued a warrant of arrest for the accused.

It caught the attention that the court's decision was announced within the hours Gül came from Ankara to Diyarbakýr.

Not long ago, Azadiya Welat Journal Editor Vedat Kurþun was sentenced to 166 years and Ozan Kýlýnç to 21 years imprisonment.
