Kurdish politicians receive up to 12 years in prison

Kurdish politicians who were detained during the political genocide operation against the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Istanbul branch on December 12, 2016, were sentenced to between 6 and 12 years in prison during the final hearing today.

An Istanbul court passed sentences in the case of HDP politicians who were detained during the police raids on the party’s Istanbul headquarters in 2016.

Kurdish politicians, including HDP Istanbul provincial branch co-chairs Doğan Erbaş and Aysel Güzel, were sentenced to a total of 76 years and 4 months in prison during the final hearing held in the 14th high criminal court of Çağlayan on Thursday.

On December 12, 2016, many Kurdish politicians were detained following police raids on the party’s Istanbul headquarters. Policemen painted racist remarks on the walls of the HDP office saying: “We came but you weren't there”. Some of the politicians were released after days of police custody.
