Kurds in Europe are preparing for a long march with the name of ‘Freedom for Öcalan-political status for the Kurdish people’. The march will start from the United Nations Office at Geneva and end in Strasbourg city where the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, the European Court of Human Rights and Committee for the Prevention of Torture are located.
Demonstrators led by representatives of institutions, intellectuals and artists will take the road following a mass press statement on 31 January. The march which will last about 18 days has been organized appertaining to the 13th anniversary of the capture of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan as a result of an international conspiracy on 15 February 1999.
KON-KURD (the Confederation of Kurdish Associations in Europe) as the organizer of the march has made a written statement on the march and called for participation from all sides of Europe. The statement pointed out to the slaughter policy of the Turkish state against the Kurdish people and called attention to Turkey’s membership to United Nations and the European Council.
Reminding of the most recent Roboski slaughter and the murder of seven civilians in Kandil area by Turkish civilians in August 2011, KON-KURD underlined that Ankara government conducted an intense diplomacy activity with an aim to close democratic Kurdish institutions in Europe as well as those in Turkey and Kurdistan.
The statement also pointed out to the silent and insensitive attitude of ECHR, CPT, European Council and United Nations in respect to the solution of the Kurdish problem and the severe isolation on PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The KON-KURD statement listed the demands of the march as follows;
- We demand that the European Council, ECHR and CPT take immediate steps to implement their duty and responsibility of ending the physical and psychological torture imposed on Öcalan.
- We expect the United Nations and the European Council to use their sanction power in terms of ensuring the freedom of Kurdish Liberation Movement to enable it play a deterministic role in a peaceful and political solution to the Kurdish problem.
- We demand that international powers like European Union, European Council, NATO, USA, and Russia put their power into effect to ensure a permanent solution to the Kurdish problem.”
Addressing particularly to representatives of institutions, intellectuals and artists as well as all Kurdistan people in Europe and democratic-progressive friends from Turkey, Middle East and Europe, KON-KURD also demanded sensibility and solidarity from the press and public opinion.
