Kurds stage mass protests throughout Europe

Kurds in Europe took to the streets for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan’s health and security. Widespread demonstrations and protests by the Kurdish community for Ocalan continue in Germany, Belgium, Canada, Sweden, France, Austria and The Netherlands.

Some reports about Ocalan’s health on social media in the past few days sparked the protests throughout Europe.

Protestors demand an end to the isolation of Abdullah Ocalan in Imrali High-Security Prison where he is imprisoned since 1999. Kurdish organizations say that their concerns will only be eased if a family member or a lawyer visits Ocalan.

GERMANY

In Germany, there were mass protests by Kurdish community in Mannheim, Frankfurt, Duisburg, Bremen, Kiel, Bremenhaven, Munchen, Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart and Kassel. The protests were organized by NAV-DEM, an umbrella organization of Kurdish associations in Germany. 

In Kiel, Kurds staged a protest in front of NDR TV studios and called on CPT and EU to act against the isolation of Ocalan.

German police arrested two protestors in Munchen for carrying Ocalan’s posters but the pair were released soon after.

In Berlin, a group of protestors gathered together in Alexanderplatz for Ocalan and marched to Potsdamerplatz.

Also in Stuttgart and Kassel, Kurds staged protests against the Turkish government and called for more actions until a visit to Imrali by a family member or a lawyer arranged.

In Duisburg, Kurdish women held a meeting in front of the central station and protested Turkey’s isolation against Ocalan.

Kurdish community in Frankfurt organized a manifestation. Kurds from neighbouring cities, Russelsheim, Offenbach, Darmstadt and Mainz also attended the action. German police briefly detained two Kurds for carrying a flag with Ocalan’s image on it.

In Mannheim more than 500 Kurds gathered together in front of the city’s central station and showed support for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan and protested Turkey.  

AUSTRIA

In Wien, Kurds gathered together in front of the Austrian parliamentary building and called for the immediate abolishment of solitary confinement in Imrali. The group chanted slogans that support Ocalan and distributed information leaflets.

GREECE

In the Greek capital, Kurds staged a protest in the famous Syntagme Square to demand information about Ocalan’s health and security. The group blocked traffic for two hours and carried out a sit-in protest.

The People’s Council in Athens released a statement and said that the actions will continue until their demands are met.

BELGIUM

Kurds took action in front of Gare Central in Brussels to protest the isolation on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Speaking at the gathering Ismet Tastan, a member of Kurdistan National Congress said that the solitary confinement on Ocalan is now in a very dangerous level and added: “We, as Kurds, will never accept this. We will be on the streets until we hear from Ocalan.”

CANADA

The Toronto Kurdish People’s Democratic Council organized a protest in Yonge street. The co-chair of Kurdish community Gurkan Orman Goren said that they will continue their actions until they get information from Ocalan’s family or lawyers.

SWEDEN

Kurds in Stockholm also were on the streets after the reports about Ocalan’s health. A group of protestors staged a demonstration in Sergel Square. Then the group continued their protests in front of Sweden State TV building.

The protestors demanded more coverage of news about Ocalan from the TV officials.

FRANCE

In France, there were protests in Bordeaux, Montpellier and Strasbourg. Kurds gathered in front of the central stations of these cities and called for an end to the isolation of Abdullah Ocalan.

THE NETHERLANDS

Kurds in Den Haag and Amsterdam took to the streets for Ocalan. In Amsterdam, more than 100 protestors gathered together in front of Amsterdam Central Station and protested Turkey.

In Den Haag, Kurds protested Turkey in the hall of central train station and chanted “Long Live Our Leader Ocalan.”
