Kýþanak: AKP stayed under the debris of this earthquake

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) C0-Chair Gültan Kýþanak remarked that Prime Minister Erdoðan spoke with the same racist attitude of some circles that recently create a public provocation with racist statements. “Just this mentality made the result of this earthquake so heavy.

Criticizing the situation in the earthquake area, Kýþanak said the followings; “The Prime Minister acknowledged that what needed to be done wasn’t done within the first 24 hours which are the life-saving hours in the event of an earthquake. Many people may lose their lives within these first 24 hours, as did the government lead to here. About 500 people died under the debris so far however half of this number could have been saved if the government had usefully treated these 24 hours. Erdoðan came to Van but neither rescue teams nor tents reached the city. Rescue works had still not started when we arrived there seven hours after the earthquake. People were waiting to die in the wreckage. The Prime Minister and his ministers visited Van with their private plane, made a great show and then left the region.”

Kýþanak Rremarked that tens of BDP MPs and mayors took part in search and rescue works, underlining that they didn’t make a show and left the area in half an hour as Erdoðan did in the first day. “With all our construction equipment, health and rescue teams, rolling kitchens, we have been trying to heal the wounds of our people here since the first day. Our mayors and MPs are still there, coordinating works”, added Kýþanak.

Commenting State Minister Beþir Atalay’s statement –“We did not suppose that there would be a need for so many tents”- as a confession, Kýþanak said; “We are faced with a government which is too bewildered to understand that there will be a need for tents in a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. This approach is unacceptable since all TV channels reported as of the first moment that all buildings in Erciþ had been demolished. Authorities couldn’t be reached within the first 24 hours when they turned a deaf ear to the situation. All these happenings showed us that the AKP was trapped in the wreckage of this earthquake and it can’t disburden itself by laying the blame on others.”
