According to official statement by Iran, 12 people lost their lives and 42 others got wounded as result of today's attacks in Iranian capital Tehran for which ISIS has claimed responsibility.
Separately, 4 people were killed in the parliament building and 2 others at Iranian Islamic Revolution leader Ayatollah Khomeini’s tomb, with reports suggesting that each scene was targeted by a suicide bomber.
Statement by Iranian intelligence claimed that each of the scenes was targeted by 4 person groups and a third assailant group has been prevented. Iranian Deputy Minister of Interior Hüseyin Zülfikari stated that the assailants entered the parliament building dressed in niqabs.
Speaking to Iranian state television, Zülfikari said a National Security Council meeting will be held in a few hours. The situation has been taken under control in Tehran.
WHAT HAPPENED?
4 people entered and attacked the parliament building today between 09.00 and 09.30 a.m. in Iranian capital Tehran and one person carried out a suicide attack in Iranian revolution leader Ayatollah Khomeini’s tomb. Meanwhile, the Iranian intelligence claims another attack was apprehended. The intelligence service Itlaat’s president didn’t give any information on what the third attack was targeting but called for the people to avoid the metro and other mass transit.
Tehran MP Ilyas Hezreti spoke to the Iranian press and said two of attackers that entered the parliament had Kalashnikovs and the other one had a pistol. Two security officers are reported dead in the clashes in the parliament building.
Some sources claim one of the attackers was a suicide bomber and exploded himself along with 4 hostages. Iranian television Press TV claimed one of the attackers took cyanide and committed suicide.
The area where Ayatollah Khomeini’s tomb is located was attacked simultaneously with the attack on the parliament. According to Iranian agencies and the state television, the attack on Khomenei’s tomb was a suicide attack. One person is reported to have died in this attack while 5 others were wounded. Separately, a woman suspected to be a suicide bomber was detained in the area.
Tehran Governor announced that one attacker detonated the explosives he was wearing and another was shot to death. Mehr News Agency shared the information that the suicide bomber in Khomeini’s tomb was in fact a woman.
Meanwhile, the level of information pollution in Iranian media was significant in the aftermath of the attacks. News agencies like Iran, Mehr, Tesnim and Fars have provided conflicting information on the number of killed and wounded people.
