Lawyer Fırat Epözdemir faces up to 15 years in prison

The prosecution has filed an indictment seeking a prison sentence of up to 15 years against Fırat Epözdemir, a member of the executive board of the Istanbul Bar Association.

The investigation into Fırat Epözdemir, a member of the executive board of the Istanbul Bar Association, has been completed. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, which initiated the investigation on charges of 'membership in a terrorist organization' and 'propaganda for a terrorist organization,' has requested a prison sentence of between 7 years and 6 months and 15 years in the indictment against Epözdemir.

The investigation into Fırat Epözdemir, a member of the executive board of the Istanbul Bar Association, who has been held in pretrial detention for nearly three months, has now concluded. In the indictment, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated: “Based on the information obtained from the investigation report, it has been determined that following statements that aligned with Abdullah Öcalan’s directive to form alliances with leftist political groups, the suspect took part in the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) as the Bağcılar district chair. The HDK, particularly in western provinces, aims to channel the political power and mass potential of leftist organizations and fringe groups into the organization.”

The Istanbul 27th High Criminal Court, to which the indictment has been submitted, will decide whether to accept the indictment after conducting the necessary review.
