Lawyers release report on jailed students

Contemporary Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) has released a report about students currently in jail. The report says there around 500 students in different prisons in Turkey.

While as much as half of these students are held in prisons in Kurdistan, the report also noted that “It is quite difficult to determine the real figures of jailed students in eastern southeastern Anatolia region in particular because of very few sources. This despite the fact that dozens of arrests are taking place on a daily basis”.

The report said that apart from the regions of Siirt, Van and Hakkari, most of the students are held in Diyarbakýr, Mardin and Midyat prisons where, according to an old report 50 students are jailed.

The report also pointed out to the long periods of detention. More than 20 students who have been remanded in custody for one or one and a half year. “Long term detentions are reaching a quite critical point as well as the high number of detentions” added the report.

The report continued calling on the government to address the issue, which could be defined as the “jailed students issue”, and indicated that unlawful application of judiciary and the practice of considering students activities organized to claim their rights, as activities which fall under the anti-terror law.

The report ended by saying that “Besides all these, the political power’s attitude of ignoring the issue and the biased approach to the issue is not acceptable. The Ministry of Justice in particular should directly bring the issue on the agenda and make a statement about it.”
