Lawyers submit 793rd appeal to visit Öcalan

The lawyers of Öcalan have today submitted a request at the Attorney General in Bursa for the 793rd time for a visit to their totally isolated client.

The lawyers of Abdullah Öcalan Rezan Sarıca, Faik Özgür Erol, Nevroz Uysal and Cengiz Yürekli have submitted the 793rd request to the Attorney General in Bursa to visit their totally isolated client.

Since his abduction in February 1999 in Nairobi/ Kenya the Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan has been held on the Turkish prison island of Imrali. For eleven years Öcalan was the only prisoner on the island - guarded by more than a thousand soldiers. The last visit of his lawyers took place on July 27, 2011. Thus, he has been denied any legal advice for over seven years. The thought leader of the Kurdish liberation movement thus holds the "European record" for detention without access to lawyers.

Since April 2015 Öcalan has been in an actual total isolation. After the last family visit on September 11, 2016, his brother Mehmet Öcalan was granted a 15-minute conversation on Imrali on January 12, 2019. At the moment, 317 prisoners are on an indefinite hunger strike demanding an end to Ocalan's isolation. The hunger strike campaign was initiated by HDP MP Leyla Güven, who has been on hunger strike since November 7.
